How To Improve The Functioning Of An AC Unit

Jessie Nichols

If your AC unit is broken, you will either need to buy a new one or have a professional repair it. In most cases it is just as cheap to buy a new one. Furthermore, modern air-conditioners are more energy-efficient than old ones. So it might be worthwhile if your AC unit is over 10 years old. You can save a little bit of money on your utility bills with an Energy Star-rated unit. However, some homeowners jump too quickly when it comes to air conditioning repair. Often, the problem has nothing to do with the actual AC unit. For this reason, you should run a few checks and make a few improvements before you decide to invest in repairing or buying an AC unit. This article will explain 2 things that could be reducing the efficiency of your air conditioner.

Clogged Furnace Filter

When it comes to your air conditioner, you probably would neglect to look at your furnace. However, most central heating and air conditioning units generate airflow through the furnace, even when only the AC is running. The furnace has a filter that is instrumental in maintaining the cleanliness of the air. However, if the filter gets clogged, your air conditioner will not have very good airflow. The filter is easy to locate and access without any tools. It is usually in a compartment with a hinged door located at the front or side of the furnace. Pull your filter out and see if it is dirty. If so, take it to the home improvement store and pick up a new one.

Dirty Condenser Coils

Every air conditioner has condenser coils that line the outside of the unit. As the name implies, the coils condense the exterior air and turn it into crisp, cool air that eventually makes its way through the furnace, via the ducts, out the vents and into your home. However, the condenser coils can easily get blocked by dirt and debris. Luckily, it is even easier to clean them. Just unplug your AC unit and then spray it down with the hose. Test your air conditioning and see if you noticed any changes.

If your AC unit is still not working properly, it is time to have AC repair done by an HVAC professional. The problem is likely due to internal issues with the actual unit, which might mean it's time to start shopping for and pricing new units.

Exploring Newer Features for Heating and Cooling Systems

When my heating ventilation and air conditioning system began to hiccup last summer, I feared the worst. The technician who checked it confirmed my fears. If I didn't replace the unit soon, it would be a mighty chilly winter. That spurred me to start looking at new systems. What I found were several features my older unit did not have. The unit that I ultimately settled on automatically switches from heating to cooling based on the temperature setting. I can also reset the thermostat remotely or program it to change settings during the day. Winter turned out to be very comfortable at my house, thanks to that new unit. If you are in the market for a new HVAC system, let's talk. I'll give you some pointers on how to find the right one for your home.
