Keeping Allergies At Bay In Your Home: How To Keep Your Air Clean

Jessie Nichols

When you are prone to allergies, you can feel miserable much of the season. Your home should be a sanctuary where you can relax and find relief from the pollen and debris in the air outside, but if your air filtration system isn't working as it should, you can be breathing similar air that exists outdoors. Here are ways you can keep your air cleaner in your home so you can breathe more comfortably and find allergy relief.

Change your air filters

Your HVAC contractor can inspect your air filtration system and change out your filters for you. When air filters get full of debris, pet hair, dust, and pollen, they fail to block and absorb the unhealthy air that enters your home. This can make your allergies worse. As a general rule, you should change your air filters at the end of the season. When allergy season is high in your area, you may want to change your air filters more frequently.

Talk to your HVAC contractor about options for air filters that can help reduce allergens in your home. High-quality air filters can help reduce debris in the air and let you feel more comfortable in your home.

Provide indoor ventilation

Opening windows lets outside air in, so you want to provide ventilation inside your home instead. As air circulates around your h ome, pollen, hair, and dust that have sneaked by your air filters have less opportunity to "settle" and get into your sensitive sinuses. Turn on a ceiling fan or plug in a small rotating fan in rooms you frequently use, such as your living or dining rooms, to keep air flowing beautifully.

Keep carpeting fresh

When allergy season hits, debris and dander settles into carpeting. Vacuum every day, or place large rugs over high-traffic areas that you can shake out a few times a week to keep debris down. If you live in an area that experiences high allergy seasons and you are prone to allergies, then switching from carpet to linoleum, tile, or hardwood can be a great option for you to help improve air quality in your home.

From your air filtration system to your carpeting, there are many ways you can help reduce allergens in your home. The cleaner your air is, the healthier you may feel. If you are experiencing itching or watery eyes, coughing, or a runny nose inside your home, your air may be to blame, and an HVAC contractor can help you breathe easier indoors again.

Exploring Newer Features for Heating and Cooling Systems

When my heating ventilation and air conditioning system began to hiccup last summer, I feared the worst. The technician who checked it confirmed my fears. If I didn't replace the unit soon, it would be a mighty chilly winter. That spurred me to start looking at new systems. What I found were several features my older unit did not have. The unit that I ultimately settled on automatically switches from heating to cooling based on the temperature setting. I can also reset the thermostat remotely or program it to change settings during the day. Winter turned out to be very comfortable at my house, thanks to that new unit. If you are in the market for a new HVAC system, let's talk. I'll give you some pointers on how to find the right one for your home.
